David J. Duffy, O.S.A., President of Malvern Preparatory School, passed away on January 9, 2006, at the age of 74. Father David Duffy was born on February 24, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA, the son of William J. Duffy and Genevieve Colvey. He was baptized March 22, 1931 in Most Blessed Sacrament Church, Philadelphia, PA. He attended St. Laurence Parish Elementary School, Upper Darby, PA. He began high school at West Catholic High School, Philadelphia, PA, (1944-1946), and completed the last two years of high school at Malvern Preparatory School, Malvern, PA (1946-1948). Upon graduation, he went to Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, NY, for a year of post-graduate studies before being received into the Order as a novice. After his novice year at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, NY, he professed first vows September 10, 1950, and he studied at Villanova University, graduating in 1953 with an AB in Philosophy. He attended Augustinian College, Washington, DC, for his four years of theological studies (1953-1957). He professed solemn vows September 10, 1953, and he was ordained a priest on February 9, 1957 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, DC. His first assignment was to Villanova University as instructor of theology (1957-1958). He was then assigned to the newly-opened Monsignor Bonner High School, Drexel Hill, PA, where he served from 1958 to 1966 as a teacher of English and Religion, and from 1966 to 1971 as Principal. He then served as a Province Counselor from 1971 to 1973. Fr. Dave then returned to the place where he said that he
had first heard and responded to his Augustinian vocation, Malvern Preparatory
School. It was at Malvern that he spent the rest of his life, (1973-2006),
first as Headmaster (1973-1990), and then as President (1990-2006). During
the 32 years of his dedicated ministry at the school, he is credited with
helping resolve the school’s financial difficulties and with helping
the school grow from an enrollment of 250 students to nearly 600 students.
Under his leadership and with the help of a dedicated Board of Trustees, qualified
faculty and active alumni the academic reputation of the school has grown
to be one of the top college preparatory schools in the region. Fr. Dave oversaw
the completion of new buildings, the beautification of the campus and its
playing fields, and he has been actively involved in the school’s capital
campaign to endow the future of the school. In appreciation, the school had
already decided to honor him with The Rev. David J. Duffy, OSA Center for
the Arts, which will be a tribute to him as alumnus, Headmaster, President
and Augustinian. Fr. Dave has also been involved in the guidance of other
academic institutions, serving on the Boards of Trustees for St. Thomas University,
Villanova University, Merion Mercy Academy, Waldron Mercy Academy, and Saint
Augustine’s Preparatory School. James H. Stewart, Head of School, said, “Father Duffy’s influence and love for the people of the Malvern Prep community is immeasurable. This School that exists today is directly a result of his vision and leadership. We are all grateful to him for that commitment, but more than anything we will all remember him for his friendship, his fellowship and his faithfulness. This is an extremely sad time for anyone who knew him. Father Duffy was a blessing to us all.” The friars who have lived and worked with him speak of his warmth, gentleness and kindness, his zeal in priestly ministry, and his Augustinian spirit of fraternity. Fr. Dave has one deceased sister, Genevieve LeBarge of Dexter, Maine, and two surviving brothers, Bill Duffy of Pittsburgh, and Frank Duffy of Hilton Head, S.C., as well as 11 nieces and nephews and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Stated Father Donald F. Reilly, Prior Provincial of the Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova: “This is a time of great sadness for both the Augustinian and Malvern communities. Father Duffy was beloved by those who knew him – and deservedly so. His gentleness, compassion, and extraordinary vision helped to mold Malvern as a truly Augustinian school. He was a builder of community, and that community is in mourning. The Augustinians grieve with the entire Malvern family during this difficult time.” A funeral Mass was held January 12, 2006. Fr. Duffy is buried in the Augustinian plot at Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken, PA. † |

Reflection by Justice William H. Lamb: A great leader, a true spiritualist, and a wonderful friend. Chester County will miss him sorely. |
Reflection by Rob Powelson, CEO, Chester County Chamber: Permit me to offer my organization's most sincere condolences on Father Duffy's passing. To us and our 1,600 member businesses that make up the Chester County Chamber, Fr. Duffy was a key part of our organization. For the past decade, he was part of our Annual Dinner program, always delivering a splendid invocation. Last May, Fr. Duffy was presented our prestigous Citizen of the Year honor. At a packed house at Longwood Gardens, he shared the podium with Governor Ed Rendell and others. In our view, it was a fitting testimony to his visionary leadership and commitment to academic excellence. I could go on and on about Father Duffy but will end with this thought. "There are rare moments in a person's life when you meet someone who impacts your community and what you strive to be as a leader. Fr. Duffy made me a better leader and cared very deeply about developing leadership at all levels. For that, I'm very grateful to have known him and worked with him. May we all do our part to continue his legacy at Malvern Prep." |
Reflection by Don Avellino '79, P'07, '10: More than a leader, more than a friend. Father Duffy is the physical embodiment of the Malvern Preparatory School. Your spirit will live on in the hearts of the entire Malvern community. God bless you and thank you for all that you have done. |
Reflection by Thomas F. Rooney Jr. Ed.D.-MB 1962: Fr. Duffy was an outstanding person who always reflected his kindness towards people. In many ways he was responsible for my career in education. I always enjoyed my conversations with him over the past 35 years. |
Anonymous Reflection: He saw the handprint of God on each person he met. |
Reflection by William C. Martyn, Class of '78: Father Duffy has helped mold so many young minds and spirits to make this world a better place. Being one of those who had the benefit of knowing and learning from him, I will be forever grateful. He lives on in us. |
Anonymous Reflection: It is impossible to conceive of how many lives; families and young men Father Duffy affected. Thirteen years ago I met Father Duffy at the first picnic we attended for the beginning of our first son's 6th grade year. We only have one more to go. His eyes lit up when he heard we had 3 sons. No one could have made us feel more welcome and honored to become part of the Malvern family. |
Reflection by Joseph T. Hobson, ESQ. '74: Father Duffy was the third of three headmasters whose tenure bridged my four years at Malvern Prep. As a member of the Student Council, I was honored and priveleged to work with Father Duffy. He was a kind and firm leader of the Malvern Community. In the years since my graduation from Malvern through the school's dramatic growth, Father Duffy grew to be the face of the school and a vital link to those of us who attended it during his term as Headamster. In fact, the resurgence that Malvern Prep experienced in this period was due to the vision and energy of Father Duffy. I will always remember him as a kind, avuncular and nurturing mentor. I am truly saddened to learn of his passing. About three years ago, I attended, along with my wife, a Malvern Prep function here in my adopted home-state of Florida. I was happy to have had a nice warm visit with Father Duffy on this occassion. This recent warm memory is indeed consoling. May his soul rest in Peace. |
Anonymous Reflection: Two of my sons attended and graduated from Malvern and during those years I would often see Father Duffy. He would always have that wonderfully contagious smile and the ability to make you feel like an old friend. He was a role model, who I know will be greatly missed. |
Reflection by David Walker, P07: Although I didn't know him personally the loss is deeply felt. He will be missed by the entire malvern Community. Our prayers are with him and his family. |
Reflection by Carolyn Avellino: Father Duffy, you have been a part of our family for thirty years. You were at Malvern when my husband Don attended, you con-celebrated our wedding 20 years ago, shared Christmas dinner with Don's parents and have been inspirational to our son's DJ and Matt who currently attend Malvern. All along you have been a friend, mentor and especially a guiding light and face of Malvern. We sadly miss your physical presence, but your spirit will live on at Malvern and in our hearts eternally. |
Reflection by Chris Carfagno: Father Duffy was a great source of inspiration for me during my time at Malvern. He was the kindest and most sincere person I have ever met. Father Duffy performed the marriage ceremony for my wife and I. I will never forget how great it was to have him be part of that day was and how special he made me feel. He had that effect on everybody who knew him. He was a great man and I will miss him. |
| Reflection by Peggy and
Family:
Words can't express my sadness at losing such a wonderful friend. Fr. D. saved my life with his persistence and care and I will be truly grateful that God gave me such a wonderful friend. You will be missed, Donald Duck, by my children, who have admired you and trusted you all their lives. We will sorely miss our dinners and gatherings together, but I know you are just a memory away and for that I am so grateful. Thank you for enriching our lives and for your friendship. Watch over us and guide us as we continue on this journey. |
Anonymous Reflection: A little man with a huge heart! When people would say they could not afford to send their son(s) to Malvern, he would quickly reply, "you cannot afford not to send your son here". So true...and so well said. You have made Malvern a very special place indeed. Rest easy thou good and faithful servant! |
Anonymous Reflection: A true man of God. A pure example of how a life should be led. |
| Reflection by Christopher
G. Furlong, II ('09):
Our family is shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Father Duffy. How wonderful it is however, that the Malvern Board of Directors had the foresight to honor Father with plans for "The Rev. David J. Duffy, O.S.A. Center for the Arts." What has always been a worthy endeavor has now gained even more significance as a true testament to the man who was truly the essence of Malvern Prep. |
Reflection by John Knebels, Former Faculty Member 1995-2000: A few years ago I told Fr. Duffy that he was a great priest, would have been a great husband, and would have been a great father. Why? Because he was a great man. For the rest of us, we have a new ally in heaven. Rest in peace, Father, and thanks for living such a wonderful life. |
Reflection by Mike ('85) and Terri McClatchy: Dear Father Duffy, Where to begin? To us, and the entire McClatchy family you were a friend, a mentor, a father figure and dearly loved member of the family. Words cannot express how honored we feel to have shared your last hours on earth this past Sunday. As usual, you were your convivial self as you baptized yet another McClatchy family member. We all shared hugs and laughs and a few heart-to-heart talks with you this last day and, as usual, said goodbye to you appreciating all you have done for the family. From the Christmas Eve Masses you celebrated in the family home, to the dinners and golf games you shared with us, we are all the better for having had you in our lives. You were greatly loved. You were greatly appreciated. You are greatly missed. God has called you to Him. Heaven's gain is our loss. |
Reflection by Malvern Parent '05, '07: From the twinkle in his eyes, to his pacing the football sidelines, to the warm embrace he gave to all, a truely remarkable man whose wisdom, guidance and warmth will be sorely missed, yet treasured by all that he touched. Rest in peace. |
Reflection by Brian McKinney, Former Malvern teacher: Fr. Duffy always led with a smile on his face. This is what drew people to him. Something so simple that made people want to be like him. He was a wonderful person, and I will never forget him. |
Reflection by Lawrence M. Farnese: I had not seen Fr. Duffy for many years but when I learned of his passing, I was truly shocked. I guess I thought Fr. Duffy would live forever - and I was right. He will live forever - through the spirit and memories of his Malvern Family and especially those students who had the privilege to call him teacher and friend. |
| Reflection by Jim Carlin:
I remember Father Duffy very well and with great affection. He was one of my favorite teachers at Bonner in the early 1960's. He will be missed. |
| Reflection by the Griffiths
Family:
Reflection: Father Duffy was one of the kindest men that we have ever known. Whenever we saw him he always had something nice to say. He was always interested in your life and what you were doing. He always expressed how thankful he was for anything you did for Malvern. We will miss him, but will always remember his wonderful example of kindness. |

Family '67 '96 '99 :
Our entire family was very sad and shocked to hear the news
of Fr. Duffy's untimely passing. We had just seen him at Mass on Christmas
Eve. He was so happy to see both of our sons and Scott's wife Heather. We
will miss his wonderful smile and how special he always made us feel. Christmas
Eve Mass at Malvern will never be the same. We always enjoyed Fr. celebrating
Mass at Sts. Philip and James. Seeing him always brought back fond rememberances
of our years at Malvern. Fr. Duffy was the spirit of Malvern Prep. What a
great loss for our family and for so many other lives that he touched. We
will miss you, Fr., more than you will ever know. God Bless you. |
| Reflection by Jim Wechsler,
Jr., P05:
Father Duffy was a great and kind man who will be truely missed. He was a good friend to my dad from their days playing football together at Malvern to saying his Funeral Mass. He was an inspiration to every boy who passed through the halls of Malvern. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered. Thank you for all you have done. |
Reflection by the Downs Family: A great friend, in every sense of the word, and a wonderful person. We are better people for having known Father Duffy. |
| Reflection by Emily Walsh:
Father Duffy was a part of my entire life. His constant smiles, encouragement, and love helped me through many ups and downs during my seventeen years on this earth. He was someone who proved that God really is in all of us. He loved every single person that he encountered, and we should be sure that lots of love is definately pouring down on us from heaven at this very moment and will continue to pour down on us always. Thank you, Father Duffy, for all that you have done for me. I will never forget your kind embrases and your continuing support. You will always be with me. |
Anonymous Reflection: He was there - to help him in high
school. |
| Reflection by Paul Wechsler
'67:
His personal strength and wisdom became the fabric of a great institution. The leadership and vision of Father Duffy gave us all a wonderful gift-a Malvern Prep that is stronger today than yesterday-and will be even stronger for many tomorrows. Thank You. |
| Reflection by Ian Konecke
'88:
As I sit here at my desk and reflect on Father Duffy's passing,
I think about my years at Malvern and how I was positively impacted by the
experience. To me Father Duffy and Malvern are synonymous, and when I think
about my high school years with him I can't help but smile. I am saddened
by the news of his passing and my thoughts go out to the entire Malvern community.

| Reflection by Frank Nash:
Fr. Dave Duffy was a part of my life, and the lives of everyone in the Nash family home in Drexel Hill from the time I was a small child. There was never a Nash family holiday or special event -- including my nephew's wedding last May in Houston, TX, that Fr. Duffy was not there if he could be. The Nash family has been profoundly affected through so many years by this very special man, priest, and family friend. I have been profoundly affected by him. I will miss Fr. Duffy's big smile and infectious deep laugh, and most importantly his loving direction in my life. My prayers join with so many others for Fr. Duffy in his new home in heaven. I also offer prayers and support to the members of the Duffy family, and to the Augustinian family where Fr. Dave Duffy gave so generously in the world of Catholic education. I will keep Fr. Duffy and his loving presence in my heart and life in all the days ahead. May God bless and reward Fr. Duffy in all eternity. I will always miss him. |
| Reflection by Fr. James
J. McCartney, OSA: I was shocked to hear of the passing of Dave Duffy, OSA. I saw him a few weeks ago and he told me he had just played 18 holes of golf that day. He looked terrific. We know not the day nor the hour! I first got to know Dave when I was an administrator at Biscayne College/St. Thomas University and Dave was on the Board of Trustees. He was always so affirming to me and always expressed his appreciation for the work I was doing. In the last 8 years the roles have been reversed; he was the President of Malvern Prep. and I am on the Board of Trustees. At every meeting I have attended, he always made it a point to talk to me privately to tell me how much he appreciated my support of Malvern Prep. The Augustinians have lost one of the really 'good guys' and we are saddened; but our sadness is muted by our faith that God will receive Dave into glory. Citizens of heaven -- watch your pocketbooks! |
| Reflection by Daniel Cullen:
I will always remember him as a smiling face greeting the students as they stepped off the bus each morning, rain or shine. He was all that Malvern teaches us to be and a great role model for any young man who came across his path. He will really be missed by all in this Malvern family. |
| Reflection by Dr. William
J. McCusker, President, Cardinal O'Hara High School:
The Cardinal O'Hara High School Community sends our sympathy and prayers to the Malvern Prep Community on the death of Fr. Duffy. I have known Fr. Duffy since I was a student at Msgr. Bonner High School and always considered him an fine gentleman and an excellent educator. Father, along with Mr. Stewart, was always willing to share their expertise with other educations. May God grant him eternal rest. |
| Reflection by Joanne Flynn:
Father Duffy and the Malvern family are in my thoughts and
prayers. |
Reflection by Karen Renshaw, P '05: Reflection: Father Duffy took me under his wing, as he did for so many others, and always had time to make me feel special. I'll always remember his warm smile and sincere handshake. I'll miss his humor, his kindness, his passion for golf and most of all, his love of all mankind. He was truly a great role model for our sons. Father Duffy was a remarkable individual who left his mark on all of us and was a driving force in Malvern Prep's success as a great institution. |
Anonymous Reflection: Father Duffy was part of my life for more than 45 years--except for my immediate family, there is no one I remember knowing longer. As I reflect on his kindness, support and friendship through good times and bad, I realize that he had a quiet yet profound influence on my life in ways that I never fully appreciated until now. I will forever miss him, but I know that he will never truly leave me, or any of us who loved him so much. I count myself blessed to have known such a great and good man. |
Reflection by Erich Seber: You will be missed here on earth but trumpets are playing in heaven with your arrival. You welcomed me to Malvern and I will always be thankful for that. |
| Reflection by Gregory Foust
'76:
Father Duffy was a wonderful friend to all who passed through the doors of Malvern Prep. He always had the time to greet you and share his thoughts. His services at Villa Maria Academy have always been appreciated by our daughter Kristin. May God Bless Him. |
| Reflection by Penny George:
Fr. Duffy was a wonderful friend, and my family and I will
miss him terribly. He was there for us during good times and bad, and helped
me through one of the hardest times in my life. I am honored to have known
so great a man. |
| Reflection by Jake Wood,
Jr.:
Father Duffy was a wonderful man, dedicated to bringing forth the message of Jesus Christ and forming young men in the Augustinian tradition. He was a man devoted the The Holy Eucharist and the sacrament of Penance. Malvern has lost a treasure and I join with all in extending my prayerful support to his family and the Order of St. Augustine. |
Reflection by Al Shrader Malvern '77, P'04, P'08: I saw Father Duffy at Dinner on New Years Eve. I went over to Father Duffy's table with my son, Rob (Malvern '04) to say hello. He came over to our table and made a fuss over our family (my four brothers, also Malvern Alums, my parents, sisters, etc.) to our hosts. Father Duffy did so many wonderful
things for Malvern and for the community. |
| Reflection by Tom McGranahan:
A fellow classmate at the academy and novitiate; may he rest in peace. |
| Reflection by the Leyden
Family:
Our hearts are broken for we have lost such a dear friend,
a man we were fortunate to have known and a man we will never forget. |
Reflection by Vince, Helene and Family: Dear Father Duffy, Thank you for being the person you were and being such a major part in our Family's life. Since '60's we've enjoyed so many fun times, especially the "Jekyll" dinners! It's been many years of wonderful, privileged friendship. Life will never be the same without you, but so much better for having had you in our lives. All Our Love and Admiration forever. Love, Vince, Helene and Family |
Reflection by Bill McFadden: The Augustinians, his family and friends gave Fr. Duffy a truly wonderful sendoff. I arrived over an hour before the Mass and St. Thomas Church was already full. The homily by Fr. Erdlin could not be improved on, and Dave's niece ended the ceremony with a witty and touching tribute that was received with sustained applause. A total stranger would have known that he was an extraordinary human being. I found only one omission in the list of his virtues. I grew up with him on Oakley Road and he was the only person in our neighborhood could speak like Donald Duck. He was bow-legged and never known as a peachy dancer. Nor was he a snappy dresser. But girls were drawn to him in great numbers because he could talk like Donald Duck. I was troubled that this skill was not mentioned in the sendoff because I thought he had suppressed it, perhaps thinking it was not appropriate for a priest. But then I read a contribution above by Peggy and was relieved to learn that he continued to charm kids that way. What a sweet man he was! |
Reflection by the Rawlings Family: We shall never lose the magic that was Father Duffy. Father was a profound gentleman whose looming presence settled children, and whose gifts of laughter and good humor calmed a troubled mind and soothed a saddened heart. It is the wish of our family, that for all who knew Father Duffy, the pain of loss that so many of us feel will intensify one's love of family and make the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. |
Reflection by Kevin and Jennifer Kolmer: Fr. Duffy was and will always be MALVERN. The service for Fr.Duffy on Thurs. evening was one of the most special times we've had as a family at Malvern. We will miss him but we'll never forget him. |
Reflection by Pat & Cliff Kennedy: We can only repeat a word someone else used to describe Father Duffy - a TREASURE. What a wonderful man he was and he touched so many lives. We are just sorry he had to leave us so soon. It was our privilege to know and love him. |
Reflection by Carmen Targa: Thank you for you friendship and guidance, you are a big part of what we are as a Family, we will miss you. Carmen, Joey, Carmen Teresa and Jose |
Reflection by Tom Ledetter: Dave married my wife Julie and me 20 years ago and the first thing you see in our wedding album is Dave's signed $10 bill. I won that off Dave playing golf before the ceremony. It reminds me just how human and full of fun the man was, and yet a priest and a man of God in the first order! We loved him and will miss him. But I've got his $10 bucks if I ever need it. God Bless you Dave. |
Reflection by the Bandos Family, P 06, 09: We are deeply saddened by the loss of Fr. Duffy and are so thankful to have known him these past four years. His presence and influence will be felt at Malvern and in our hearts forever. |
Reflection by a Malvern teacher: It seems like only yesterday that I sat nervously in Father Duffy's office being interviewed for a teaching position at Malvern Prep. I can only thank God for granting me the opportunity to know and love Fr. Dave for these past twenty eight years. My heart is heavy with the loss of such a special friend and mentor. I will miss him dearly. |
Reflection by Bill Hopkins: It is with sadness that I learned of the death of Dave Duffy. He was a friend, a model priest, a very visible witness of the humility and compassion of the Lord he served over many years. One felt accepted and confirmed in his presence. His quiet joy was a testimony to the Spirit that dwelled in him. Although a man of considerable administrative talent, his talent was informed more by a personal encounter, care and concern than any abstract organizational approach that reduced his associates to objects. I loved him and all he represented in his quiet but powerful witness to the heart of the Gospel. |
Reflection by Bob Frank: A smile crosses my face when I think of Fr. Duffy. Kindness and sincerity shone from the man. Malvern has never hade a better care taker or friend. Heaven is now his post and I am sure he will continue to oversee and protect his beloved Malvern Prep. Although I have not seen him for many years, I shall remember him for many more… |
Reflection by Anthony T. Liberatore, Jr. "78": I sent a gift to Father commorating his 30 years at Malvern a few years back. I wrote in the card that I would never forget him and Fr. Flynn saying my father's funeral mass at St. Donato's on 1/15/90. Fr. Duffy wrote back a very nice note and recalled that in all his 30+ years of teaching that in 1974 (my freshman yr. at Malvern) I was the only student he ever changed a grade for - English up to an "A" from a "B" - AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS HE REMEBERED! That was a tremendous service for a tremendous "man of God" last Thurs. at Villanova chapel. He will be sorely missed! I certainly appreciate the opportunity to post this memory! |
Reflection by Mike and Cheryl Dillon: (A letter sent to Father Flynn, Father Erdlen, and Jim Stewart from Mike and Cheryl Dillon) Good morning! We wanted to tell you what a special tribute you gave to Father Duffy on Thursday. He has touched thousands of lives, just like each of you. The whole day honored a great man and gave Dave the opportunity to teach us one more lesson as well...that each day we all are given the chance to positively impact those around us - what we do with that gift is our decision. We grieve over the loss of Father Dave for his family, Augustinian brothers...and all of us. We can only strive to exemplify all that he stood for in life. Prayerfully, Mike, Cheryl, Kevin, Jennifer, and Megan Dillon PS One of our favorite Father Duffy stories: Father Duffy would regularly come to Villa Maria Academy to say Mass for the girls and faculty. He felt very comfortable with our daughters Jennifer and Megan, so for all of their years at Villa he had a special code set up with them - while giving the homily he told the girls to give him the "hand across the throat sign" when he was getting too long-winded or he was loosing the girls' attention!!! PPS OK, just one more favorite...Mike and I were chatting with him in his office late one afternoon. I said that we had to go because we had to make the Mass for the Holy Day. Dave looked at us and said, "Holy Day...oh no, I forgot!" So he invited Mike and me over to the chapel to say mass just for us. In fifteen minutes we all fulfilled our Mass obligation and gave us one more reason to love and laugh with Father Dave! |
| Reflection by Frank, Father's
Brother: Dave and I played football together, played golf together, prayed together and cried together. He married my childern and baptized my grandchildren. He will be missed at our family celebrations because we all loved him and admired him for what he stood for. He was my brother who I truly loved. |
Reflection by David Lewis Wright, '87: First impresssions are, indeed, lasting impressions. I first met Father Duffy when I was a sixth grader from Sts. Phillip and James visting Malvern on the occasion of my entrance interview for the Lower School with Paddy Moran. On entering Knapp hall with my parents, I met Father Dave coming in the oppositie direction on the stairs. He greeted us and asked where I was headed, upon which he asked two questions. Spell "receive", upon which I spelled it given the "i" before "e" rule. Next, he asked me to spell "believe". I spelled this correctly as well. After this test, Father smiled and said "You'll do fine". I felt that I would, and I did. Sixteen years later, Father Duffy married my wife and me in Boston. Whenever he visted the area, we would try and get together. I will sincerely miss the man that made me so comfortable embarking on the great journey that was Malvern and gave so much to my life over the last decades of his. |
Reflection by Gary Duda, '88, current MS faculty member: Fr. Dave was such a special man who touched the lives of so many individuals, both yound and old. His enthusiasm and zest for life was contagious and his smile would light up a room. I will be forever grateful for everything he's done for me at Malvern...the list is too numerous indeed! I'm so happy to have shared those times with you on the golf course together. Those moments I will cherish forever. You have a left Malvern in good hands and your legacy will live on in everyone that walks through these doors. I will always hold a special place in my heart for Fr Dave. The Duda family will miss him. May you hit every fairway in Heaven and reach every par 5 in two. Rest in peace. |

Family:
Malvern was very blessed indeed to have Father Duffy for so many years. In the few years we knew him, we always saw him with a smile on his face and a cheerful greeting. He had a great sense of humor, which was evident when he rode the mechanical bull at the Mother/son dance a few years ago. The Duffy family and the Malvern family are in our prayers. |
| Reflection by Barbara Skey:
As a member of St. Patrick parish in Malvern, I would always smile when I saw Fr. Duffy walk up the aisle to celebrate Mass with us. I knew we were going to have a wonderful homily along with a good story! He did this for so many years and is loved by our parish community. I remember talking with him one day when I was walking at the Prep and he was glad to see that people in the community were enjoying the school grounds. I'm sure he joins Mary at the top of the hill watching over his beloved Malvern. Thank you, Father. |
Reflection by Dennis McGee '78: It is hard to imagine Malvern Prep without Fr. Duffy. He was the first person I met when I arrived there and the constant throughout all these years. Fr. Duffy, thank you for everything you have done for me and my family. God bless you. |
| Reflection by Judi Woomer
Novak:
Father Duffy was always a part of our family. He was at every occassion, every birth, every wedding, every death. He put so much of his soul into the love he shared and the true caring of every individual. My brother, Tom, was stricken with bone cancer when he attended Bonner High School. Father organized and accompanied my brother to Lourdes, France in hopes of finding him a cure. My brother died in 1970. But, I can tell you no one was more of a comfort to my family or more of a friend to my brother than Father. I know Tommy was happy to see him in heaven. You will be missed Father. |
| Reflection by Eileen Honer:
Father Duffy and my dad were schoolmates at Malvern Prep and he was a wonderful friend to our family in later years. I dont think we ever really told him how much we appreciated his saying the funeral Mass for Dad but I am sure he does now. He is Home and will be missed here. |
