Augustinian Sisters Proclaimed “Blessed”

On Saturday, December 8th, two Augustinian Missionary Sisters who had been martyred in Algeria in 1994 were beatified. Sisters Caridad Álvarez Martín and Esther Paniagua Alonso were proclaimed “Blessed” together with 18 other religious who gave their lives in recent years in that country. The two sisters freely decided to remain in Algeria in the face of extreme violence, “out of fidelity to the Gospel and love for the Algerian people who had welcomed them,” according to the then provincial of the Augustinian Sisters. “We are in the hands of God,” they declared. Their martyrdom occurred on the 23rd of October, 1994 as they were returning home after the celebration of Mass.
